Each day, men from various parts of Asia make a stop in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) where they embark on their search for a perfect match. Using verité footage and interviews, Match Made offers a glimpse into the intricate network of the buying and selling of women as brides from villages around Saigon. «On the streets of Ho Chi Minh City, streams of motorcycles and a cacophony of honking sounds inject a disconcerting anxiety into the city. In July 2004, my cameraperson and I arrived in Saigon to follow the owners of a Singaporean matchmaking agency started by a Taiwanese immigrant, and their client, a 38 year-old Singaporean bachelor who eventually left Saigon five days later, a married man. Shortly after our arrival, we were confined in a dingy hotel room and saw over 80 women in less than three hours. These girls are transformed into trendy young women for the benefit of the foreign men. A majority of these Vietnamese girls are between 18 and 25, and come from the countryside. Though they occur in different parts of the world, often the stories are similar.» (Mirabelle Ang)
