Dara is interested in places and memories. In the Danish ferry port town of Rodbyhavn, she collects remnants of lives lost to progress. A new tunnel between Germany and Denmark is supposed to end here. Many people will have to give up their homes, they will leave behind books, furniture, photographs. Their houses are soon to be demolished, yet, for the moment, Dara is still perusing those “ruins”. She meets Lucek, a young man from Poland. He belongs to a group of migrant workers, hired by a dubious subcontractor who all of a sudden doesn’t seem able to pay them. Like her protagonist Dara, Anna Sofie Hartmann also collects fragments from a landscape that would not ordinarily be of any particular interest for cinema. Rodbyhavn turns out to be a quintessentially European place, a place where stories connect, a transitory space with glimpses of histories of everyday lives that stretch ever further back. Voices and images are brought into association in a manner sometimes closer to the essay film than narrative cinema. Past and present intersect in a contemplation of places, memories, hopes, and (never permanent) destinies. (Bert Rebhandl)
