DRACULA – PAGES FROM A VIRGIN'S DIARY
For his first feature-length work in six years, Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin has gone to the classic scary tale, having adapted the Royal Winnipeg Ballets version of «Dracula», Bram Stokers 19th-century story of the supernatural. With Maddins very particular touch, this eerie drama becomes a highly stylized, black-and-white with just a dash of red! silent dance melodrama. The photography is mesmerizing, and combined with the choreography heightens the madness that afflicts the characters. His camera moves like a voyeur, taking peeks at the action, lovingly, until danger suddenly appears! All the familiar iconic figures are on hand the vampire (as fearsome stranger and more), Lucy (the virgin), Van Helsing, Harker, Mina, and Renfield the eater of bugs).
