Immediately after his release from prison in France, Kamel is deported to Algeria, his country of origin. In forced exile, he becomes a lucid observer of a society in turmoil, as Algeria is torn between the urge to modernize and the weight of ancestral tradition. «When I was writing, I didn't go back to Algeria at all to see where the youth of today was at. I wrote this story using recollections from my vacations. That was also because I sensed that things hadn't really moved on, that time goes by more slowly over there. Here, life races past you. Over there, you have the time to kick back and think, to be in sync with things. It's a big shock when you cross from Algeria to France. It takes generations to absorb.» (Rabah Ameur-Zaïmeche)
