Wade Whitehouse lives in Lawford, New Hampshire, a town with neither a past nor a future. He serves as the towns police officer. Mostly, though, he tries to get through the day without screwing up. His life is falling apart around him. His wife Lillian left a long time ago, his daughter visits him only once in a while, his brother has fled to the big city, and his father is still busy torturing Wades mother. Wades girlfriend Margie wants to leave him, and he wonders: How did his life get that bad so fast?
