ISLAND WORLDS IN THE AFTERNOON, PURE FILM AT NIGHT

Undoubtedly one of the strongest moments in Brillante Mendoza's new film SINAPUPUNAN include those sequences in which the camera plunges into the sea, to join differnt worrld effortlessly and inartificially. The invisible and unpredictable, the struggle for survival under water is accessible and therefore the view of the islanders' natural source of life. Mendoza does not focus on telling an emotionally charged story about a childless couple with the desire for offspring in a very dramatic way. Rather, rituals, gestures and cultural codes are at the center of attention and convey, without judging, the image of a remote society.

Two film projections superimposed? Impossible? No, see here!
But first things first: ARNULF RAINER, Kubelka's classic from 1960 is show first, then ANTIPHON, the quasi inverted picture and sound version of ARNULF RAINER. Subsequently, a double projection of the two films, side by side, follows and finally in mutual superposition.
This unique cinematic performance is framed by n installation, that presents the films again, now as a material in its materiality in itself, as a filmstrip. Peter Kubelka's project MONUMENT FILM is a "call to persistent resistance" and stands as a statement for analog cinematic technology.
