14 Moments of the Festival Jubilee

The Viennale, which this year is not exactly short on highlights, would like to give its audience a small point of orientation with the series Event of the Day and also offer possible, selected program suggestions. The individual daily events are altogether different in character and are taking place at various festival locations.

OPENING OF THE VIENNALE 2012
Thurs. October 25 • Gartenbaukino & Festival Center
The Viennale will start – like every year – with a film and party. Only both will be a bit bigger than life this time.

GALA IN HONOR OF MICHAL CAINE
Fri. October 26 • 8pm, Gartenbaukino
World premiere of the restored version of SLEUTH (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, USA/GB 1972) with subsequent talk with Michael Caine on stage at the Gartenbaukino.

MONUMENT FILM
Sat. October 27 • 8.30pm, Gartenbaukino
An evening of a special kind with Peter Kubelka and the presentation of both his works, ARNULF RAINER (1960) and ANTIPHON (2012) in a form never before seen.

BOOK PRESENTATION & READING: RECOLLECTIONS OF VIENNA BY FRITZ LANG
Sun. October 28 • 7.30pm, Festival Center
As a new volume in the Viennale series The Useful Book, the festival is presenting Fritz Lang’s recollections of his birth city, Vienna – for the first time complete.

FILM PREMIERE: LEVIATHAN
Mon. October 29 • 11pm, Gartenbaukino
The major experimental documentary film of the duo Véréna Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor was described as “A gothic tale of fish and men.” On the Gartenbaukino screen, in the presence of the directors.

DISCUSSION: “RAUS AUS DER KOMMASTELLE”
Tues. October 30 • 8.30pm, Festival Center
With a few exceptions, film festivals in Austria carve out a miserable existence, yet still have essential contributions to cinema. This needs discussion.

THREE TIMES BOOGIE WOOGIE
Wed. October 31 • from 1.30pm, Metro Kino
One film times three. Three films in one. James Benning’s hypnotic series with a new third part (ONE WAY BOOGIE WOOGIE 27 YEARS LATER) as world premiere. In the presence of the filmmaker.

TERROR, CHIPS AND BEER
Thurs. November 1 • 7.30pm, Festival Center
Jörg Buttgereit, curator of the Special Program They Wanted to See Something Different presents the film THE TROLLENBERG TERROR from the year 1958 with accompanying audio commentary by John Carpenter. Just this once and never again.

BOOK PRESENTATION & READING: FESTIVAL BY CÉSAR AIRA
Fri. November 2 • 7.30pm, Festival Center
Another volume of the series The Useful Book is published in German translation for the first time. A small, fantastical roman a clef about the crazy world of film festivals.

GALA IN HONOR OF WOLF SUSCHITZKY
Sat. November 3 • 9pm, Künstlerhauskino
A birthday evening to honor the 100-year-old camera man and photographer Wolf Suschitzky, born in Vienna, who will also be present. Showing GET CARTER (Mike Hodges, GB 1971).

AN EVENING TO REMEMBER
Sun. November 4 • 9pm, Metro Kino
A rare acoustic concert and poetry reading of Viennale guest Patti Smith in the exclusive setting of the Metro Kino.

FILM PREMIERE: MUSEUM HOURS
Mon, November 5 • 8.30pm, Gartenbaukino
Jem Cohen’s view of Vienna. A film that pays tribute to the city. In the presence of the director, the actors and executive producer, Patti Smith.

READING RAINALD GOETZ
Tues. November 6 • 7.30pm, Festival Center
Author Rainald Goetz visits the Viennale and reads from his new, acclaimed novel Johann Holtrop.

VIENNALE 2012 CLOSING
Wed. November 7, Gartenbaukino & Festival Center
The Italian closing film L'INTERVALLO as a kind of antithesis to the opening film. And then the party in the Festival Center until the beginning of Viennale 2013.
