San Vittore

Das zentrale Gefängnis in Mailand. In einer Kinderzeichung sieht es aus wie ein Schloss. Ancarani untersucht diesen äußerlich scheinbar unüberwindlichen Ort aus der Perspektive von Kindern, die ihre inhaftierten Väter trefen. Weitere, teils drastische Zeichnungen: Wie wenig hermetisch das Gefängnis auf einer anderen Ebene ist, in den Köpfen der Kinder nämlich, vermittelt der Film, indem er die Spuren der Kontrollen und der Besuche in den Mittelpunkt stellt. Yuri Ancarani’s new film is based in part on an art therapy program that works with the children of prison inmates. The film shows us their drawings, many of which are of the prison building itself. There is an emphasis on the castle-like shape of San Vittore, a visual confusion between the images the kids know from their picture books and this concrete edifice that plays such a key role in their lives. As SAN VITTORE shows us, we may be witnessing the foreclosure of these kids’ concept of freedom. And that may in fact be the ordinary function of the state. (Michael Sicinski)
