Kazoku gêmu, featuring the famous scene of the exam student Shigeyuki writing «twilight» over and over again in his notebook, also seems to mark the twilight of ATGs era, or more precisely, the beginning of what would come after it. Although Morita Yoshimitsu began his career in 8mm film, moving into features only through self-financed production and pink eiga, he has remained a thoroughly commercial though certainly playfully experimental director since then. Kazoku gêmu may have needed ATGs money, in addition to that provided by the main producers, Nikkatsu Studio and New Century Producers, but it didnt necessarily need either ATG itself or its spirit of independence.
